Slinger finish is short-track racing at its best

Alex Prunty of Lomira races regularly at Slinger Speedway.

There’s a lot of good racing on the short tracks around the country, but it doesn’t get much better than the super-late model features Sunday night at Slinger Speedway.

Alex Prunty nipped Gary Lamonte by 0.026 of a second with Steve Apel less than a quarter-second behind.

The YouTube videos from Dan Margetta, who manages to be everywhere, are worth watching. If you don’t have time for the full nine minutes of this one, you’re going to miss some great action, but if you can’t spare 90 seconds to watch the end, then you don’t like asphalt super-lates.

“It was fun and they were telling me on the radio we were beating Alex by half a tenth a lap and we kept going hard and we ran him down,” LaMonte said (quotes courtesy of Slinger Speedway). “I got to the inside of him and on the last lap he bobbled and made a mistake and we just lost by .026.”

Prunty has won two of the past three races and finished second to his uncle Dennis in the other. With three points nights remaining for the premier division, Apel leads the standings, 14 points ahead of Lamonte and 33 ahead of Alex Prunty.

“If I want to win the championship we’ve got to win races, “Prunty said. “We have to keep it up and the car has been running pretty well. Tonight was closer than I like but it was fun.”
