FOR THE WIN

How much does the last-placed golfer win?

CHARLOTTE - Golf's money-making structure is unapologetically draconian. But there's beauty in that brutality, the kind you rarely see in modern professional sports.

Whereas payouts in other sports depend on a variety of factors ranging from how good your agent is to how desperate teams are at a given moment, golf is a pure meritocracy. It doesn't matter where you from or how old you are; if you make the cut, you get paid. If you don't, you go home empty handed. If he beat another guy that day, you make more than that other guy that day. Players win only as much as they earn, and nothing more.

Which brings us onto our question: How much does the last-placed golfer take home?

David Muttitt finished in last place this year will walk home with just $3,000 - barely enough to cover his expenses for the week. The last-placed player to make the cut will take home about $19,000, while the winner takes home a cool $1.89 million.

If a player finishes alone in second, they'll pocket the full $1.134 million. But if, for example, two players tie for second place, the payout for second place ($1.134 million) and third place ($714,000) are added then divided by the number of players involved in the tie (two, in this case, which would make the payout $924,500 each).

Anyway, here's the full payout chart.
