ATV slams into tree, killing two South Milwaukee men in Marinette County

SILVER CLIFF - Two South Milwaukee men were killed early Friday when their all-terrain vehicle slammed into an oak tree in rural western Marinette County.

Speed and alcohol likely contributed to the crash, which was on Boat Landing Road 11 in Silver Cliff, Sheriff Jerry Sauve said. 

Neither victim was wearing a helmet.

Sauve said the passenger, Matthew Allan Nitecki, 35, died at the scene from head, neck and internal injuries. Driver Tristan Scott Gilgenbach, 37, suffered massive head and internal injuries. He died at Bay Area Medical Center in Marinette.

Silver Cliff Rescue Squad volunteers, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources wardens, Bay Area Medical Center paramedics and the Marinette County Coroner's Office responded.
