Former Rutgers player L.J. Liston charged with murder in Michigan

Former Rutgers University linebacker Lester "L.J." Liston was charged with murder and three other felonies by Michigan prosecutors.

Liston, 22, was arraigned on Friday and will remain held without bail on first-degree murder, felony use of a firearm, possession of less than 50 grams of cocaine with intent distribute and careless discharge of a firearm causing injury or death, according to Genesee County Prosecutor’s Office spokesperson John Potbury.

Liston allegedly gunned down a man a man on July 30 in retaliation for another murder, Potbury told USA TODAY Sports. A woman was also injured in the shooting, MLive.com reported.

Then-Rutgers coach Kyle Flood dismissed Liston in March 2015, although the team didn’t cite the reason why Liston and the Scarlet Knights parted ways. NJ.com reported that Liston had issues with meeting the team’s study hall and conditioning requirements, and he clashed with coaches.

Liston, who cited the birth of his son to move to a university closer to home, transferred toNorthern Michigan University after he departed Rutgers.
