Summer reminds me of car trips, boats and beaches. Each summer growing up we’d always look forward to the summer trip. Whether it was a trip to the beach or a flight up to the Cape, it was not only was it a vacation, it was a chance to make lasting memories with family members.
My two favorite summer travel memories included renting a car and driving around the Northeast from Manhattan to Cape Code to Martha’s Vineyard and taking an Amtrak sleeper car to explore the Nation’s Capital.
Boston, Cape Cod & Martha’s Vineyard
We flew up to Boston and picked up our rental car to explore Boston before heading over to the Cape to meet up with family. We took a day trip on the ferry over to Martha’s Vineyard and rode bikes all over the island. We even saw where that famous scene from Jaws was filmed. How cool is that for a kid? We dug for clams and I lost my sandals in knee deep mud. My brother and I learned how to sail, cook clams, and had a great summer with the family.

Amtrak To DC
The trip up to DC was memorable because it was my first train ride in a sleeper car. We had a bunk room and I remember watching “train tv†thinking it was the coolest thing.

Cliche, but I enjoy taking my kids to Disney World every summer.
Husband and I took our family to Las Vegas (10 people total). It was a year and a half in the making, we stayed at the MGM Skylofts..pretty sweet…saw some shows, rented a cabana, had lots of good meals, went to an MMA gym to see some fighters, took a trip downtown. It was pricey but our kids talk about the trip all the time. We are a blended family so it was a bonding thing too. It was in 2009 so we are ready for another trip sometime soon…Europe?

One of my favorite travel memories is when my wife and I sprinted through the streets of Playa del Carmen to try to catch the ferry in time (had a scuba appointment I didn’t want to miss!). It was our first international trip and everyone looked at us like we were crazy.

Our upcoming memorable trip will be Hawaii with the kids this summer. My parents went several times as I was growing up and never took my sister and I. The same was true for my wife. We decided that even though this will be our first trip to Hawaii, we just had to bring the kids with us.
When I was 7 we made a Grand Tour of the western US. Starting from Washington we visited Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, California, Oregon and back home to Washington. Quite an odyssey for a couple in their late 20s with children aged 7, 6 and 4, driving a Rambler station wagon!
Seeing a string quartet perform Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons” in Munich and seeing Handel’s “Messiah” performed in Vienna, Austria on New Year Day.
Favorite memory was camping out and exploring the forest.
High school trip when I was in Malaysia – Redang Island. BEST EVER! Cheap and beautiful. Look it up!

Memorable summer travel: A 28 day North Carolina Outward Bound expedition after high school graduation. It changed my life forever. I have much more gratitude and appreciation for the little things, and the little things are all that really matter.
