Red Sox land reliever Addison Reed from Mets

The Boston Red Sox are adding a big piece piece to their bullpen, acquiring Addison Reed from the New York Mets in exchange for three pitching prospects.

Reed had a 2.57 ERA with 48 strikeouts in 49 innings for the Mets this season. He's been the team's closer in the absence of Jeurys Familia and has 19 saves in 21 opportunities.

Reed can be expected to assume the eighth inning role for the Red Sox, handing the ball off to closer Craig Kimbrel.

The Red Sox have been using Heath Hembree, Joe Kelly and Robby Scott in the late innings and are without Tyler Thornburg, who was acquired in December but will miss the entire season due to injury.

In return, the Mets will receive pitching prospects Jamie Callahan, Gerson Bautista and Stephen Nogosek.

Boston enters Monday a half-game back of the Yankees in the AL East, and with a half-game lead on the Royals for the first Wild Card spot.

Reed is a free agent after this season.
