Nebraska sees increase in dicamba complaints

The Nebraska Department of Agriculture (NDA) says it has experienced an increase in complaints alleging crop damage from herbicide products containing dicamba. However, the department has not released the number of complaints it has received.

NDA says it is actively investigating the complaints for noncompliance with state and federal laws, but does not plan to limit the use of dicamba “at this time”.

Nebraska Extension weed management specialist Amit Jhala says he has observed several fields with symptoms similar to those caused by dicamba. He says the damage is found “from one end to the other, suggesting off-target movement through volatility”.

According to Jhala, an estimated 500-thousand acres of dicamba-tolerant soybeans were planted this year in Nebraska.
