PolitiFact: How many people in the military are transgender?

President Donald Trump announced on Twitter on Wednesday that he would seek to ban transgender people from serving in the military.

U.S. Rep. Mark Pocan responded with criticism and a claim. The Madison-area Democrat said “more than 15,000 transgender Americans" are "serving in the military today."

PolitiFact Wisconsin finds there are no official counts. But based on one of two prominently cited estimates, Pocan's figure is in the ballpark.
