Drivers will need some extra travel time around Water St. in downtown Milwaukee the next few days because of a repaving project.

Pavement work begins on N. Water St. Monday as parts of the street in downtown Milwaukee will close this week for a paving project.

The city's Department of Public Works is working on the road from E. Kilbourn Ave. to N. Van Buren St.

The first part of the project started Monday, shutting down the east side of N. Water St. north of E. Kilbourn Ave. to E. Knapp St. The west side of N. Water St. closed about 9 a.m.

The second phase of the paving project will start Tuesday. Both sides of N. Water St. from N. Van Buren to N. Pleasant  will be closed. The last phase will start Wednesday, shutting down both sides of the street from Pleasant to E. Knapp.

Traffic will be re-routed during the project, including the Milwaukee County Transit System’s Green Line and the 33, 57 and 143 Flyer bus routes, according to the public works department.
