Properly cared for, outdoor cushions will last

Outdoor cushions and upholstered pieces are more durable than ever because of advanced fabric technology. They are treated to resist stains, mildew and moisture damage and are manufactured to withstand the elements.

But the care you give them helps them look their best for a longer time.

Here are some tips:

  • Most important, save the tags and precisely follow the manufacturer’s care directions so that any warranty is not voided.
  • Regularly use a brush or soft broom to sweep off any leaves or debris on the surface that might stain or decompose.
  • If the warranty has expired or you have lost the instructions, opt for a mild cleaning solution made of liquid dish detergent and water over harsh chemicals or abrasives that may break down the fabric fibers. Use a sponge or soft brush and rinse gently with water.
  • Wipe spills immediately and spot clean when needed.
  • Do not power-wash cushions or upholstered furniture.
  • If your cushions are older and have lost their repellent finish (water no longer beads up on the surface), consider applying a spray-on fabric protector to restore repellency. Start with clean, dry cushions and follow directions. Let them dry thoroughly between coats.
  • When the season is over, store the cushions or upholstered furniture indoors or under cover if possible. If you don’t have the space, cover them and wrap them tightly to keep out water and small creatures.

“I’m a conservative consumer and, yes, outdoor fabric technology today is very advanced,” says Jackie Hirschhaut, executive director of the International Casual Furnishings Association. “But I would cover the furniture in extreme weather or take the pieces in so that they don’t face a bigger challenge than necessary.

“In harsh winter weather, I wouldn’t want to look out my window and see my nice deck furniture covered with a foot of snow.”
