US Airways is running a 100% bonus on purchase or gifted miles from May 1 through May 31, 2013. This is a great promotion that I take advantage of as a great way to add to my bankroll of US Airways miles. By taking advantage of this buy miles 100% bonus promotion, members can purchase enough miles for a round-trip Business Class ticket to Europe or North Asia from the United States.

Promotion Details

The amount of bonus miles awarded depends on the amount of miles purchased. For the biggest bonus, 100%, members are required to purchased between 30,000 and 50,000 miles to get the full 100% bonus.

  • Buy 5,000-9,000 miles – get 25% bonus
  • Buy 10,000-19,000 miles – get 50% bonus
  • Buy 20,000-29,000 miles – get 75% bonus
  • Buy 30,000-50,000 miles – get 100% bonus

The bonus amounts translate into enough miles to purchase a round-trip Business Class award ticket to Europe, North Asia or a number of other great destinations based on the US Airways partner award chart.

Purchasing miles at each of the levels will mean a different price per mile. The miles are sold at $.035 per mile plus a 7.5% tax recovery charge. So the more you buy, the bigger the bonus thereby decreasing your cost per mile. The best price per mile is obtained by purchasing enough miles to get the 100% bonus.

  • Buy 9,000 miles + 2,250 bonus = 11,250 miles
    • Price per mile is ~$.03
    • (((9,000 x .035)x1.075))/11,250)))
  • Buy 19,000 miles + 9,500 bonus = 28,500 miles
    • Price per mile is ~$.025
    • (((9,000 x .035)x1.075))/28,500)))
  • Buy 29,000 miles + 21,750 bonus = 50,750 miles
    • Price per mile is ~$.0215
    • (((9,000 x .035)x1.075))/50,750)))
  • Buy 50,000 miles + 50,000 bonus = 100,000 miles
    • Price per mile is ~$.0188
    • (((9,000 x .035)x1.075))/11,250)))

Clearly the best value is to purchase the full 50,000 miles and receive a 100% bonus for a total of 100,000 miles. On the purchase of 50,000 miles, you’ll receive a 50,000 bonus to give you a total of 100,000 miles. All for a price of $1,750 plus taxes and fees. The total cost comes out to $1,881.25, not a bad price for enough miles to get you to Europe or North Asia in Business Class. Of course, you’ll have to factor in any add on fees for the award ticket itself, like airline fuel surcharges or airline phone ticketing fees.

  5. Hi The Weekly Flyer. Could you also send me details as well on how to use US Airways miles to upgrade a United ticket to business class. We are trying to do the same thing right now to get my mother from the US to Hong Kong, but were told after buying the United ticket that it wasn’t eligible for upgrade. Thanks for any help you can provide.
