Carolina Panthers release veteran tackle Michael Oher, who failed physical

The Carolina Panthers released former starting left tackle Michael Oher with a failed physical designation Thursday.

T Michael Oher spent two years with the Panthers.

Oher, who started for the Panthers in Super Bowl 50, has been in the concussion protocol since last September and only played in three games last season. He missed the voluntary portion of offseason workouts and was unable to participate in a minicamp in June.

He was charged with a misdemeanor in April after allegedly assaulting an Uber driver.

Oher had been planning to report with his teammates to training camp in Spartanburg, S.C., next week, according to ESPN.

But over the past few months, it appeared Oher was no longer in Carolina's plans. The team signed left tackle Matt Kalil, the brother of Panthers center Ryan Kalil, in March. Head coach Ron Rivera had been non-committal about Oher’s future.

His release comes one day after the team re-hired Marty Hurney to serve as interim general manager. The team fired former GM Dave Gettleman on Monday.

Oher was one of few current or former players to defend Gettleman this week, posting on Instagram that Gettlman, “really cares about you as a person, not just a player.” Oher wrote that Gettleman consistently checked on him while he was recovering from his concussion.

Oher is widely known as the subject of the book and movie The Blind Side.
