June milk production up 1.7% on year
USDA says milk production in the top 23 states during June was 16.930 billion pounds, up 1.7% from June 2016.
Average per cow production was the highest for the month since the series of reports started at 1,939 pounds and the herd was up 83,000 head on the year at 8.731 million head. In June 2016, the average was 1,926 pounds and the herd was 8.648 million head.
California was the top production state, followed by Wisconsin, and the highest per cow yield was in Michigan.
2017 milk production is ahead of the 2016 pace. Production, yield, and herd numbers in listed Brownfield states:
Illinois: 163 million pounds, up 3.8% from June 2016; per cow average of 1,750 pounds, 80 more than a year ago; herd of 93,000 head, down 1,000 from last year
Indiana: 346 million pounds, up 2.7% from June 2016; per cow average of 1,860 pounds, 30 more than a year ago; herd of 186,000 head, up 2,000 from last year
Iowa: 426 million pounds, up 1.7% from June 2016; per cow average of 1,965 pounds, unchanged from a year ago; herd of 217,000 head, up 4,000 from last year
Michigan: 948 million pounds, up 2.8% from June 2016; per cow average of 2,220 pounds, 20 more than a year ago; herd of 427,000 head, up 8,000 from last year
Minnesota: 822 million pounds, up 1.4% from June 2016; per cow average of 1,975 pounds, 40 more than a year ago; herd of 458,000 head, down 4,000 from last year
Ohio: 468 million pounds, up 0.4% from June 2016; per cow average of 1,785 pounds, 35 more than a year ago; herd of 262,000 head, down 4,000 from last year
South Dakota: 215 million pounds, up 2.9% from June 2016; per cow average of 1,840 pounds, 20 more than a year ago; herd of 117,000 head, up 2,000 from last year
Wisconsin: 2.543 billion pounds, up 0.2% from June 2016; per cow average of 1,990 pounds, 5 more than a year ago; herd of 1.278 million head, unchanged from last year
