Morning Buzz: Can the Packers' secondary bounce back?

We start with the latest positional preview wherein Ryan Wood takes a look at the Packers’ wide receivers.

The Packers certainly will have seven receivers deserving of making an NFL roster. Always careful to ensure the depth chart is stocked with developmental talent — Thompson drafted at least one receiver each of the past five years — the Packers surprised even themselves this spring, selecting two on the draft’s final day.

DeAngelo Yancey (fifth round) and Malachi Dupre (seventh) join a group that, in effect, already has a trio of 1,000-yard receivers: Jordy Nelson (2011, ’13, ’14, ’16), Randall Cobb (2014) and Davante Adams (997 yards last season). The Packers also were the only team with two receivers catching double-digit touchdowns, thanks in no small part to quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ scorching play in the second half of 2016.

Nate Davis looks at pass catching groups from around the league and ranks them against each other. Davis has the Packers at No. 2 behind only the New York Giants.

Jordy Nelson's 13 yards per catch were his fewest since 2010, a nitpick considering he had a league-high 14 TD grabs a year removed from an ACL tear. Davante Adams surpassed Randall Cobb as Aaron Rodgers' second-favorite target, though that calculus could shift with the signing of TE Martellus Bennett.

PFF also ranked all the secondaries in the league, with the Packers coming in at No. 16.

The Packers cornerbacks struggled last year with injuries and poor play, highlighted by Quinten Rollins allowing a 135.4 passer rating into his coverage, fourth highest in the league, and Damarious Randall allowing 2.05 yards per cover snap, also fourth highest in the league. Rare free agent addition Davon House does not figure to be the savior as he gave up a league worst 144.9 passer rating (min. 100 snaps). Second round pick Kevin King is a physical specimen and could see a lot of playing time should 2017 unfold similarly to last season. Morgan Burnett and Ha Ha Clinton-Dix return to form one of the league’s most solid safety duo, as both graded in the top 22 at the position in 2016. Burnett finished with the 14th highest overall grade (84.8)while Clinton-Dix finished with the 22nd (82.4).
