The Lincoln County Health Council’s Get Fit Initiative 35-day challenge is geared for all ages and abilities. The fitness challenge that began Saturday but can be entered at any time during the challenge period is a free community event that encourages participants to get out and run, walk, swim, and cycle as much as possible between now and August 18. The initiative offers participants free body mass index testing at the beginning and at the end of the challenge. The goal for all participants is to become more active, and to monitor the positive results of exercise over the next month. The oil rub-out artwork of Tiffanie Owen is on display at the Capitan Public Library through August. Library hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Friday and Saturday, closed on Monday and Sunday. The library is at 101 E. 2nd Street, Capitan. Food sizzles and is served three times a day at the Nogal Mesa Ranchman's Camp Meeting that begins. Camp runs July 19-23. All are invited to attend.

 

Nogal Mesa Ranchman’s Camp meeting is set to begin Wednesday, July 19, with a meal at the encampment on Nogal Mesa, followed by the first worship service. Thursday, three worship services are planned, with an addition of a sing at 3 p.m. Friday and a memorial service at 3 p.m. Saturday. Children and youth activities, and prayer meetings are part of the 77-year event, which will conclude with the noon meal July 23.

The 2017 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition Gold Medalist Yukwon Sunwoo, 28, of South Korea performs at 8 p.m., July 22 at the Spencer Theater. He will perform Schubert Sonata in C Minor D. 958; Grainger “Ramble on the last Love-duet” from Richard Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier; Rachmaninoff Sonata No. 2 in B-flat Minor, op. 36 (1931), and "Ravel La Valse." A Lemon Piccata White Fish Buffet precedes the performance at 6 p.m.

The Friends of the Hubbard Museum will meet at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, July 27, in Room 115 at Eastern New Mexico University-Ruidoso. Artifact of the month will be 19th century dueling pistols from the Stradling collection. Members and visitors also will meet the museum's newest employee, Alyssa Ashenbacher, curator of exhibits. On Saturday, July 29, the public is invited to experience a World War II reenactment, showing a bit of what the greatest generation experienced in liberating Europe during the war. American, British, Italian and German camps will be set up at Fort Stanton with authentic WW2 tents, equipment, vehicles and weapons. Reenactors will be present to give explanations and demonstrations to the public of what the men and women they portray did and saw. The reenactors will have their camps and displays open for public view at 3 p.m., then at 5:30 pm, a World War II reenactment battle will be staged for the public to view.

 

The Alto Artists Studio Tour is set for Aug. 3-6 in the Alto area north of Ruidoso. The weekend begins with a kick-off party from 5 pm. To 7 p.m., Aug. 3, at the Spencer Theater, where a silent auction will be conducted, art will be for sale and visitors can meet the artists.

 

The Dog Days of Summer Pooch Party staged by the Parks and Recreation Department is set for 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Aug. 6, at Ruidoso’s Municipal Pool, 515 Sudderth Drive. Admission is $4 for the first dog and $8 for the second, $10 for more than two. Swimming is exclusively for the canines, who must have current and proof of vaccinations. Dogs must be accompanied by an adult. Donations for the Humane Society of Lincoln County are welcome and could include bleach, towels, paper towels, cat litter, dish soap, trash bags, Pine Sol, blankets or donations toward food.
