I haven’t made a secret of the fact that I have Type 1 Diabetes here. In fact, I have a post category called “Diabetic Traveler” that I populate from time to time, usually with security experiences more so than general health. I’ve always done a fairly decent job managing my diabetes, but over the last two years, I would say that my “self management” grade has dropped from a solid A to a solid C. Just being “average” at this isn’t good enough, so I’ve been working on getting myself back together.

I just visited my doctor and my “a1c” is within .5 of goal…that’s progress. Now, I’ve got to keep picking at my weight, and that’s become a challenge with increased travel. Maybe it’s just me, but about the last thing I want to do when I get to the hotel in the evening after a day of travel is go to the gym, so I’ve been focused on rolling out of bed early and going to the gym….with some success, but I’m not quite disciplined enough to get up at 4:45am every morning just yet.

Perhaps I’m the only one with this problem, but in general, I’ve found that I eat more poorly when I’m traveling, so that is a focus area for me. Keeping alcohol consumption in check is another. With a renewed focus on eating better and living better…and getting to the gym at least 3 to 4 days per week, I’m thinking things should fall into place by my next doctor’s appointment, even with a lot of travel. What are some things that you do to stay healthy on the road?
