The past week or so has been quite glorious for anyone looking to get into South America from the United States on the cheap. Both American Airlines and United Airlines had crazy sales from Orlando to Rio and now there is another sale available – in business class no less – from New York City to Chile on either AA or LAN metal for the long-haul segments. We’re talking about <$1000 fares to just about anywhere in Chile in business class, and Easter Island is included! And they are still available as of this morning. Needless to say, I’ve got a couple more flights booked now than I expected to have at this point in the year. But all in a good way. I think.
Considering that I started the year without any major trips planned I think that I’ve filled out my dance card pretty nicely so far. Between late April and Labor Day I have the following southern hemisphere flights booked:
And I still have to figure out how I’m getting home from Johannesburg. I’m hoping that a routing via South America works. Those are fun lines.
And, lest there is any confusion, I am not actually averse to traveling anywhere, including the southern hemisphere. It just seemed like a decent post title.

That’s awesome all the trips you’ve lined up so far. The map illustrations makes it more thrilling to see the looong distances that you will travel. The SIN-PER-JNB route coincidently is on my list of routes to do, so I’ll be curious to read your take on the journey!
Gold star for creative use of the word “antipodal”! SOunds like a great time lined up. If only I weren’t facing a potential furlough in a month, I’d have strongly considered heading down to Easter Island or something – excellent deals.
Award space on SA between JNB/GRU is abundant and you can take it from there.
Good stuff. I’ve done that Sao Paolo to Jo’burg run, its kinda cool, then i did Jo’burg to Perth to Sydney to Auckland to Papeete to LAX; this was on my Southern hemisphere crawl a few years back.
BTW, where (LINK) are the details for the AA fare sale?
There is some discussion about the sale on FlyerTalk, Kerwin. That’s probably as good a place to read about it as any. Basically April 1 – June 12 travel dates, NYC-many Chile destinations and sub-$1000 fares.
As for getting home from Jo’bug, I’ve done the SA JNB-EZE route before but not GRU. GRU is a nicer plane (330 v 343) but gets in to Brazil way too late to make onward connections and I need to be back in the USA that following morning. I’m leaning towards giving Ethiopian a try, with their JNB-ADD-(FCO)-IAD option.
Just FYI, Ethiopian is starting GRU soon. June, I believe…
thanks, booked 4 business and first class tickets on AA, JFK-MIA-SLC for 7 days,April 2nd and return April 9th a 13 hr each way for $906 each. I have more than enough miles to use but this deal can,t be beat.

I took advantage of the JFK-IPC deal in Business. Was able to get F on AA between JFK and MIA each way on the 767-200.
I found the flights via ITA Matrix calendar search for April and did a multi-city search on AA.com to book.
