PEABODY, Mass. — Former PGA champion David Toms missed the cut Friday at his first U.S. Senior Open championship, unable to overcome a troubled putter and some errant drives over two days.

"I didn't hit the ball well, didn't make many putts and that's a bad recipe," Toms said after completing his morning round at Salem Country well out of contention with a two-day score of 75-71 for 146.

Toms, playing with former PGA touring pros Jerry Kelly and Steve Flesch, never made the run of birdies he would have needed to qualify for weekend play. Kirk Triplett at 11 under par 129 was the early leader Friday morning.

David Toms plays the second round of the US Senior Open on Friday in Massachusetts.

Starting play at Hole No. 10, his first birdie did not come until No. 5 on his second nine, with a putt of about 10 feet on the 209-yard par 3. He birdied the last hole, No. 9, with a short iron to within a foot of the hole.

In between he struggled to find the right landing spots on Salem's slick greens and "mis-clubbed" several times.

Toms started play well behind the leaders in 112th place, the result of a lackluster 75 on Thursday. His biggest setback Thursday: a triple bogey 7 on hole No. 8, where he pulled his drive into the left woods and was forced to hit two left-handed shots to escape.

Toms said he will next play July 13-16 in the Constellation Senior Players Championship at Caves Valley Golf Club in Baltimore.
