Naples detective says pair smoked heroin with child in car

Two Collier County residents were arrested Friday afternoon after a police detective said he saw the pair smoking heroin in front of a 7-year-old in a hotel parking lot in Naples.

Justin Michael Benfield, 28, of the 4900 block of Pepper Circle, East Naples, and Amber Nicole Nelson, 29, of the 1300 block of Ninth Street SW, Golden Gate Estates, were arrested.

Each was charged with heroin possession and child neglect, both felonies, and possession of narcotic paraphernalia, a misdemeanor.

Authorities also found there was an active arrest warrant for Nelson on charges of possessing marijuana and narcotic paraphernalia.

The Collier County Sheriff’s Office reported an undercover Naples police detective observed Benfield and Nelson place white powder on a piece of aluminum foil, heat the foil with a lighter and then use a straw to inhale the fumes while the two sat in a Dodge Dart.

The car was near the front entrance of a hotel on U.S. 41 near 26th Avenue North, the arrest report states. A 7-year-old child was sitting in the back of the car at the time, the report states.

The state Department of Children and Families was contacted, and the child was taken to the custody of a family member.

Benfield said all of the heroin and paraphernalia belonged to him, the report states.
