Madison police are investigating a fatal stabbing of a man inside a south-side apartment early Saturday and have detained the man's roommate as a "person of interest." It is the city's fifth homicide.

Officers were dispatched to the apartment in the 1000 block of W. Badger Road around 5:30 a.m. following a disconnected 911 call.

At a news conference Saturday afternoon, Madison Police Chief Mike Koval said officers found a trail of blood leading away from the 4-unit building. After a forced entry, he said, officers found overturned furniture and blood, and a 52-year-old male who appeared to have been killed as a result of stab wounds. The victim's 27-year-old roommate was taken into custody around 7 a.m., he said.
