An armed, reportedly suicidal man fatally shot by Waukesha police after a 90-minute stand-off was identified Friday as William C. Brewster, 64.

Brewster was armed with a handgun when he was shot about 9:30 p.m. Sunday in the backyard of a home in the 2000 block of Sunkist Ave., according to Waukesha police.

A woman had called police shortly after 8 p.m. to report that a man had been drinking alcohol, wanted to kill himself and was armed with a gun, police said.

Officers from the Waukesha and New Berlin police departments and Waukesha County sheriff's deputies went to the home, where Brewster was shot by Waukesha officers when he "disobeyed officers' commands," police said.

The officers who shot Brewster, who have not been identified, have one to five years of service on the department and have been placed on paid administrative leave, Waukesha Police Chief Russell P. Jack said a day after the shooting.

Friday, a statement from Jack that did not include Brewster's place of residence said no further information on the shooting was available.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice's Division of Criminal Investigation is handling the investigation into the incident in accordance with state law that requires an outside agency to probe fatal officer-involved shootings.
