Minnesota Dairy Growth Alliance Summit

Minnesota dairy leaders are gathering in St. Paul to discuss ways to improve the industry.

The Minnesota Dairy Growth Alliance was formed two years ago in response to a 20 year trend of lower milk production in the state.

Minnesota Milk Producers Association president and Goodhue County dairy farmer David Buck says that trend is turning around.

“The last several years it kind of bottomed, and (now) it’s starting to go the other way.  We just think Minnesota is a great place to dairy and I think it will continue to be that way.”

As the Summit begins, Buck tells Brownfield a shortage of milk processing capacity remains a top concern.

“In the last five years it has probably done a 180.  Five years ago there would be people looking for your milk, and now it’s to the point where you probably can’t switch creameries because everybody’s full.”

While there are no immediate plans to add processing plants in Minnesota, Buck says he hopes conversations this week will spark interest among the dairy sector.
