Kansas City Chiefs extend coach Andy Reid's contract, part ways with GM John Dorsey

Andy Reid has turned the Kansas City Chiefs into a perennial playoff contender, and now he's being rewarded for it. However, he'll have to sustain the franchise's success amid a major change to the front office.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid won his first AFC West title in 2016.

The club announced an extension for its coach Thursday shortly before revealing the departure of general manager John Dorsey.

“I notified John that we would not be extending his contract beyond the 2017 season, and after consideration, we felt it was in his best interests and the best interests of the team to part ways now,” team chairman and CEO Clark Hunt said in a statement. “This decision, while a difficult one, allows John to pursue other opportunities as we continue our preparations for the upcoming season and the seasons to come. My family and I sincerely appreciate John’s work over the last four-and-a-half years, and we wish him nothing but the best in the future.”

After 14 years as coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, Reid came to Kansas City in January of 2013, just days before Dorsey was hired. The Chiefs have reached the postseason in three of four seasons since after going three times in the 15 years before the arrival of Reid and Dorsey.

Reid's task now is vying for a title. The Chiefs haven't reached the AFC Championship Game since the 1993 season and last played in the Super Bowl in 1970.

Contractual terms of his new deal were not revealed.

The reigning AFC West champions are shaping up as a strong unit again in 2017 but also have an eye toward the future after taking quarterback Patrick Mahomes in the first round of this year's draft.

Reid is 44-24 in Kansas City (including playoffs) and 184-126-1 overall.
