A much-loved Milwaukee home inspector who was killed in an attempted carjacking earlier this year may get a building named in his honor.

The building at 809 N. Broadway, which houses a number of city offices, would be renamed the Greg "Ziggy" Zyszkiewicz Municipal Building under a proposal sponsored by Ald. Bob Donovan.

"Let's not forget him. The senseless act that took his life, while on the job, was horrible. A gaping hole was left in his family's lives, the lives of his friends and co-workers who respected and loved him," the name change request reads. "If approved, dedicating a building in his name would forever be a sense of pride and honor in his memory."

Donovan's proposal was introduced Tuesday.

Zyszkiewicz's killing shook the city.

He was a special enforcement inspector for the Department of Neighborhood Services, a job that typically deals with the most serious problem properties in the city. He also had worked as a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel newspaper carrier.

Zyszkiewicz was found inside his vehicle in the area of N. 23rd and W. Cherry streets. He was there to conduct a routine inspection of the exterior of a building with code violations that had not been corrected.
