After the successful launch of last year’s first Ruidoso Marathon, the staff of the village’s Parks and Recreation Department is enthusiastic about staging the 2nd Annual Ruidoso Marathon and Half Marathon this weekend.

About 30 marathon runners and 130 half- marathon participants will gather Sunday in Wingfield Park to join in the race and move toward earning a medal. The start time is 6 a.m. for Marathon runners and 7:30 a.m. for the Half Marathon runners.

The sky ablaze with amazing colors, three marathon runners close in on their goal.

Canyons such as Flume, Main and Cedar Creek are on the list for the full course runners, up Musket Ball and down Alpine Village Road to cross Mechem Drive over to The Links of Sierra Blanca Golf Course recreational path.

The Half Marathon runners will head around Cree Meadows towards Village Hall and then up to White Mountain Meadows Drive. They will move up Sunny Slope to University Drive to unite on Leon Farrar with the Marathon runners. Together they finish up at The Quarters parking lot in Midtown on Sudderth Drive, the finish staging area.

“If you live in these course area, please be careful on your way to church or cheer-on the runners as they come by your house, Parks and Recreation Director Rodney Griego said. “As part of pre-race day activities, we brought back the Schlotzky's Bun Run (Saturday). Kids can run a one mile out and back, as well as a 5K and 10K course.”

Proceeds from those runs will go to the EcoServants, a youth organization that works on projects in the Ruidoso area and a major supplier of helpers for village events, Griego said. All pre-race day activities take place at the White Mountain Recreational Complex from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday, in the pavilion at the Kids Connection playground.

The start for the Bun Runs is 5 p.m. More information is available at www.ruidosmarathon.com.

“So bring out your kids, support a great cause,” Griego said. “Chef Shawn will be out there with his food truck. Enjoy a sporty afternoon in Ruidoso.”
