Ohio corn 52% and soybeans 58% good to excellent

Sporadic rainfall and warm temperatures helped boost corn growth this week.  According to the latest weekly crop report 96 percent of Ohio’s corn crop has emerged and 52 percent is rated good to excellent and 41 percent is rated fair.  Ninety-six percent of Ohio soybeans are planted, 85 percent emerged, and 58 percent rated good to excellent.

Marion County farmer John Buck says crops in his area look pretty sad.  “Most of the corn in our area – crop insurance has said about 85 percent was replanted,” he says.  “I’ve seen some guys replant three and four times.”

As for soybeans, Buck says, “anything planted early isn’t too bad.”  “The later stuff is definitely coming along,” he says.  “But there’s quite a few beans that just don’t look like they normally do.  They’re not greening up like they should – they’re not growing quite like you think that they should be.”

Forty-five percent of the winter wheat crop is mature with 3 percent harvested and ninety-two percent of the first cutting of alfalfa is complete.
