CHAMBERSBURG -- The borough of Chambersburg is marketing its water park a year before the pool in Memorial Park is scheduled to reopen.

The latest billboard ad appears on Newburg Road (Pa. 696) in Cumberland County, just north of Shippensburg.

Chambersburg is playing up the 2018 opening of the Memorial Park pool that is closed this summer for renovations.

“The billboards are donated by Kegerreis Outdoor, cost nothing to the borough,” Borough Manager Jeffrey Stonehill said. “We did it now because the Memorial Park Pool is closed this summer, and we want to build excitement for the new facility.”

The water park is to open on Memorial Day 2018. The $6.9 million aquatic center is currently under construction. The basic outline of the pool has been carved out, but no concrete has been poured, according to Guy Shaul, superintendent of Parks and Recreation.

More than 1,000 people will be able to play at :

  • A 715-square foot children's pool with interactive play equipment with a capacity of 59 toddlers.
  • A 5,497-square-foot activity pool, including a lazy river and other features with a capacity of 458 people.
  • A 7,065-square-foot lap pool with six 25-meter lap lanes.
  • Three water slides for up to 515 people.

The center also will feature a nine-hole miniature golf course.

A 2014 agreement between the borough and Kegerreis allows the advertising company to keep a billboard on borough property on Fifth Avenue near TB Wood's. In exchange, Kegerreis rotates a billboard ad around Franklin County at locations approved by the borough. The agreement is set to renew in 2019 for four years.

Shaul said the original ads featured rec department activities and were switched to the water park ad in the fall of 2015.
