An inmate at the Dane County Jail was treated at a local hospital after attempting suicide, authorities said Saturday.

According to the Dane County Sheriff's Office, the inmate cut his wrist with the metal blade removed from a disposable razor he'd been given to shave. He was found around 8:30 p.m. by a deputy who was conducting a safety and security check.

The office said in a news release that deputies and nursing staff saved the man's life when a deputy used a standard-issue tourniquet to help stop the flow of blood.

The inmate was treated at a local hospital and returned to the jail, according to the news release.
