What to keep in mind while boating this weekend

Boating safety first

Thousands of people are expected to head to the beaches and ocean this Memorial Day weekend, and authorities are urging everyone to be safe, especially while boating.

"Practicing safe boating is essential, and we urge all mariners to remain alert and informed," said Capt. Charlene Downey, commanding officer of U.S. Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach.

Andy Werner, a sergeant with the Channel Islands Harbor Patrol in Oxnard, sounded a similar note, urging everyone who goes out onto the water to wear a life jacket.

"Also, be sure that your safety equipment is up to date and on the boat," Werner said.

Other safety tips include not putting too many people on a boat, lest it become unstable and unsafe.

"No drinking while boating," Werner said, noting that "the same restrictions apply to boating that do to motor vehicles. We give out DUIs, so don't get one."

Boaters also are urged to carry a VHF radio and to use VHF channels 12 or 16.

Also, stay informed on current weather conditions by visiting  the National Weather Service online (http://bit.ly/2qkZa6V) or calling the Channel Islands Harbor Patrol at 973-5959. The Ventura Harbor Patrol can be reached at 642-8618.

"Know how to contact local authorities," Werner said.

The Channel Islands Harbor Patrol office is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Officers can be reached there by calling 382-3000.

Boaters should also carry marine flares in case of an emergency and ensure that their bilge pumps are working and that their boats are seaworthy for heavy winds and rain.
