USFRA releases sustainability report

The U.S. Farmers and Ranchers Alliance (USFRA) has released its first Agriculture in America Sustainability Report.

CEO Randy Krotz tells Brownfield farmers and ranchers have been working to be sustainable for decades and this report will help the food industry understand what technologies and practices are used to protect the environment.  “When a food company comes out and says, ‘Hey, we want you to be sustainable and we want sustainable food production—so don’t use GMOs.’ We have failed as agriculture to some degree to help that food company understand that that actually takes us in the opposite direction.”

He says the report includes sustainability metrics for soybeans, dairy, poultry, pork, corn, sugarbeets, cotton and beef.  “This report goes into each species, each commodity, and it talks more broadly about individual farmers and what they’re doing on their farm to be sustainable to protect the water, soil, air and habitat around their farms.”

He says nearly 70 percent of farmers believe food organizations might not understand what sustainability means on the farm and this report will help the conversation within the food supply chain.

The announcement was made as part of the Sustainable Brands Conference in Detroit, Michigan this week which highlights environmental and social work of major companies.
