The Wauwatosa sandwich shop the Picnic Basket has a new owner and new name — Walt's Sandwich Place — along with additions to the menu.

The counter-service restaurant made the switch on May 15. Walter Weiberg, who was the general manager of the shop at 10600 W. Blue Mound Road, bought his cousin's shares in it and now owns it jointly with his father, Jay Weiberg.

Tim Weiberg opened the Tosa shop in 2014. He still owns the Picnic Basket in Nashotah.

Burgers had been specials at the shop previously, but Walter Weiberg said he had to add four of them to the menu. "I'm a huge burger guy," he said.

The beef, never frozen, is seasoned and shaped by hand at the shop, he said, and griddled on a flat-top grill. The half-pound burgers, served on ciabatta rolls, are $9.99; a double-patty burger is $13.99.

The shop previously made breakfast sandwiches, although they weren't listed on the menu. Walt's has made it official, adding four sandwiches such as the Spicy Scrambler, two eggs, three strips of bacon, cheese and spicy-hot sauce. Breakfast sandwiches are $6.99 and $9.99, except for the Sunrise Marathon, the shop's 13-strip ($13.49) or 26-strip ($19.49) bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich with the addition of a sunny-side-up egg.

Otherwise, the menu mostly has kept the Picnic Basket menu intact, aside from removing the pastrami and prime rib sandwiches and adding a vegetable wrap, Weiberg said.

Hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., with breakfast served until 10:30 a.m. The grand opening for Walt's Sandwich Place will be June 26, when it will have $1 cold subs all day.

The shop will begin online ordering soon, Weiberg said, and he hopes to add beer by the bottle, wine and coffee in the next couple of months.
