Wisconsin beats Missouri in NCAA softball opener

Chloe Miller socked a two-run homer and Wisconsin downed Missouri, 7-2, Friday night in the first round of the NCAA softball tournament in Eugene, Ore.

Brooke Wyderski drove in three runs and Kaitlyn Menz tossed a three-hitter for the Badgers.

The Badgers (34-15) will play Oregon or Illinois-Chicago in the double-elimination Eugene Regional at 4 p.m. Saturday.

BASEBALL

Mason McMahon scattered five hits in six innings and UW-La Crosse turned back host UW-Whitewater, 5-2, in the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional.

La Crosse (30-17) moves on to play Concordia (Ill.) or Adrian at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

The Warhawks (36-8) dropped to the losers’ bracket in the double-elimination tournament and will face St. Thomas (27-17) at 10 a.m. Saturday.

St. Scholastica 2, St. Norbert 0: Martin Alcoverde struck out 13 en route to a complete game as the Saints eliminated the Green Knights in the opener at Whitewater’s James B. Miller Stadium.

Alcoverde (8-1) allowed five singles and three walks.

The Green Knights finished with a 30-13 record — the most wins in program history.
