The 23rd Annual Kids Fishing Day is set for June 3 at Grindstone Lake.

The water level in the village reservoir is increasing, creating better habitat for the fish, which are stocked in the lake by the state Game and Fish Department. Osprey and eagle circle the water looking for a dinner, and visitors can hike or bike on nearby trails.

But from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., it’s all about young anglers and instilling in them a love of fishing.

Prizes will be awarded for various competitions, such as casting. Kayak rides will be offered, as well as some games. Wildlife experts are scheduled to give presentations on subjects that should be interesting to the young fishermen.

Snacks and drinks also will be available.

With the dam sealed to diminish leaks, osprey viewing areas established, fishing as good as ever and canoeing and swimming now allowed, Grindstone Recreational Area is targeted for campsite development by the village of Ruidoso.

Organizers and supporters of the popular annual event are the U.S. Forest Service and the Lincoln National Forest, New Mexico Game & Fish, the Bureau of Land Management, Trout Unlimited – Gila and Rio Grande, Walmart, Ruidoso Parks and Recreation Department, The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Albuquerque Biopark and the Mesilla Valley Fly Fishers.
