3 Things You Can Do Right Away
When you’re a high-capacity leader, how you manage your time, the people you lead and your life at home bring a unique set of challenges. Here’s what Gavin learned about serving others better while recently taking a 30-day sabbatical to recharge.
- Allow yourself to grieve. No matter how menial a loss is, it still needs to be grieved. When we grieve a loss well, we can bury it well. Any loss that is un-grieved still gets buried, but it gets buried alive. And when something comes back after it was buried alive, it never looks good as it did originally.
- Learn when to be present and when to step back. You think that having your hand in everything is a good idea at first. It lets people know there’s a leader who can be trusted, and they’ll be thankful to know someone is steering the ship. As your organization grows, you’ll learn how to delegate, give others the opportunity to set up and allocate your time where it can be best served.
- Protect your time. Gavin arrived at a place where he realized being connected to his senior leaders and volunteers was critical. He made it a priority to connect with people who were leading change so he could reach out to those coming to know Jesus. When everyone is pulling you in different directions, try to figure out what people really need and leverage the talents of those who can serve others. Be strategic with your availability and take the time to process your initiatives.
