College roundup: FSW softball picks up two wins at NJCAA Region 8 Tournament

The Florida SouthWestern State College softball team beat Tallahassee Community 8-0 and Daytona State 12-2 on the first day of the NJCAA Region 8/FCSAA State Tournament at Historic Dodgertown in Vero Beach on Friday.

In the game against Tallahassee Community, the Buccaneers scored two runs in the third inning with Marta Fuentes and Criza Bulanadi coming home on errors. Molly Roark hit an RBI single in the fourth and Mikenzie Vaughn hit a two-run double in the fifth. FSW capped the game in the sixth with Riley Russell scoring on an error and Mikayla Werahiko hitting a two-run double.

Giovanna Watts picked up the win, allowing three hits, while striking out three in four innings.

In the victory over Daytona State, FSW scored two runs in the first with Fuentes coming home on an error and Werahiko hitting an RBI single. The Bucs added four runs in the third on a two-run triple by Christian Quinn, and RBI singles by Vaughn and Kayla Rangiawha. Vaughn followed with another RBI in the fourth. FSW sealed the game in the fifth with RBI singles by Rangiawha and Bulanadi, Rangiawha coming home on an error, Werahiko hitting an RBI single and Emily Cummings hitting a sacrifice fly.

Courtney Gettins picked up the win, surrendering two runs on five hits, while striking out two in five innings.

FSW remains in Vero Beach to play Central Florida on Saturday at noon. The winner of that game advances to the NJCAA Region Championship game also to be played Saturday.

BASEBALL

FLORIDA GULF COAST UNIVERSITY 7, NEW JERSEY INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY 5: The Eagles broke a 5-5 tie in the top of the 10th inning with an RBI single by Richie Garcia, followed by a sacrifice fly by Eli Lovell.

Kenton Hering picked up the win, giving up two hits and two walks, while striking out two in 2 2/3 innings of relief.

With the victory the Eagles snap a six-game losing skid.

FGCU (29-16, 5-8 Atlantic Sun Conference) remains in Newark, New Jersey, for a second game against NJIT on Saturday at 1 p.m.
