Josh Jones: What scouts say

Bob McGinn

Here’s what NFL personnel people told the Journal Sentinel’s Bob McGinn about North Carolina State safety Josh Jones before the draft:

North Carolina State's Josh Jones (2) tackles Georgia Southern's Alfred Ramsby at Carter-Finley Stadium on August 30, 2014 in Raleigh, North Carolina.

AFC scout: “Just on the player, I’d take him over (Jamal) Adams. He’s got instincts, coverage. He’s a deluxe strong safety. He’s really good.”

NFC scout: “Not a fan. He looks the part. I just think instincts might hold him back.”

AFC scout: “He’s probably going to go second round. He’s got to be discounted a little bit for me … there’s some stuff off the field.”

AFC scout: “He’s a big man (6-1 1/2, 221). Great tester. Shows the speed on tape. Man cover is going to be a little bit of a concern, but real high-end talent in terms of size and speed. He’s a starting-level safety for sure.”

AFC scout: “I gave him a fourth-round grade. Good feet, backpedals easy. One speed, no burst. Played a lot of two-deep there.”

NFC scout: “His grades were pretty good. Box guy. Good athlete.”

AFC scout: ”He’s making himself some money. He’s real close to the top group (of safeties).”

NFC scout: “I really liked him. He has upside because of his size.”

AFC scout: “Big guy. He can run. It’s crazy (4.40). He played (some) corner and moved OK. I think he’s a safety but if you’re playing press …"

NFC scout: “I like him.”
