A wide-range of weather, temperatures across the Heartland

Across the Corn Belt, warmth lingers across portions of the Ohio Valley. Elsewhere, below-normal temperatures and pockets of surplus soil moisture are limiting fieldwork and slowing corn emergence. In the upper Midwest, this morning’s low temperatures dipped well below the freezing mark as far south as northern Iowa.

On the Plains, a significant, winter-like storm is underway. Currently, a chilly rain is falling across Nebraska and environs. Farther north, in the Dakotas, previously fallen snow and sub-freezing temperatures have curtailed fieldwork and prevented the emergence of spring wheat and other recent plantings.

In the South, warm, mostly dry weather is promoting a rapid pace of crop emergence and development. In areas where heavy rain fell earlier this week, from the mid-South into parts of the Virginia and the Carolinas, some lowland fieldwork delays persist.

In the West, late-season snow is blanketing portions of the Rockies, especially in Wyoming. Cool weather prevails throughout the West, maintaining a slow pace of crop emergence and development, while breezy conditions are developing across parts of California and the Southwest.
