Seiko Is Recreating Their First Dive Watch

In 1965, when watches with high water resistance weren’t widely available, Seiko produced their first ever dive watch in the Seiko 62MAS (reference 6217). Decades later, Seiko is recreating their first dive watch with a few different editions that will be available throughout the year and present very different takes on the original. The limited edition Prospex SLA017 remains faithful to the 1965 classic that was taken on the 8th Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition but the technology has been thoroughly updated. The case size is a little larger at almost 40mm, but the design elements like the hands, bezel markers and dolphin emblem on the caseback are the same as the original. The SPB051 and SPB053 are described by Seiko as modern re-interpretations of the 1965 classic with wider hands, larger cases, and different hour markers that make them equally inspired by the original while still fitting in the Seiko Prospex lineup. The limited edition SLA017 will be available in July, followed by the SPB051 and SPB053 which will both be available in November.
