Tennessee Vols add Louisville CB Shaq Wiggins as graduate transfer

Shaq Wiggins started in Neyland Stadium for Georgia in 2013. Now he's going to try to do it in a Tennessee uniform.

Former Louisville cornerback Shaq Wiggins

Wiggins will make UT his third and final college stop. The cornerback who played at Louisville the past two seasons announced Wednesday on his Twitter account that he's coming to UT as a graduate transfer. He'll be eligible for 2017 to compete for the Vols.

Cornerback is a position of need for Tennessee. Cameron Sutton, a mainstay for four years, is expected to be selected in the NFL draft this week. Emmanuel Moseley and Justin Martin are the leading candidates headed into fall camp.

Now Wiggins enters the mix. The 5-foot-10, 175-pound Tyrone, Ga., product chose the Vols over South Carolina and Mississippi State after traveling to Knoxville twice this month, including the Orange and White Game.

Wiggins was a four-star prospect out of Sandy Springs High School who signed with Georgia. He made eight starts as a true freshman in 2013, including one in Georgia's 34-31 overtime win at Tennessee. Wiggins recorded two interceptions as a freshman, returning one for a touchdown against Vanderbilt.

After the 2013 season, he followed Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham to Louisville to join Bobby Petrino's program. Wiggins sat out as a redshirt in 2014 and started every game for the Cardinals in 2015. He recorded 11 pass-breakups and was honorable mention All-Atlantic Coast Conference.

Wiggins' 2016 season was a disappointment. He started only one game and made eight tackles while being nagged by injuries. Grantham left for Mississippi State and Wiggins announced in March that he would graduate and transfer, saying the decision was "for me and my family.''

Petrino initially included Mississippi State on a list that Louisville would not release Wiggins to, along with Notre Dame, Purdue and Kentucky. Petrino later backed off on Mississippi State but Wiggins decided Tennessee would be the best fit.

Moseley has 19 career starts, including 10 last year. He was injured during spring practice. Martin has eight starts over two years and was saluted by the coaching staff for his fresh start in spring practice under new secondary coach Charlton Warren. Both will be seniors.

The cast also includes sophomores Marquille Osborne and Baylen Buchanan, plus D.J. Henderson, a junior-college transfer who redshirted in 2016. Arriving in the summer are signees  Cheyenne Labruzza, Shawn Shamburger and Terrell Bailey.
