LA LA LAND (Lionsgate/Summit) Throwback Hollywood musical, with Emma Stone as an aspiring actress who connects with a jazz musician (Ryan Gosling) with dreams of his own. Winner of six Oscars, including best director for Damien Chazelle (“Whiplash”), best actress for Emma Stone, and original score and original song for Nicolet High School grad Justin Hurwitz. (PG-13; some language)

UNDERWORLD: BLOOD WARS (Sony) After years of waging war against werewolves, a vampire finds herself facing a fight from her own kind as well. Fifth movie in the action-horror series starring Kate Beckinsale. (R; violence, gore, some sexuality)

THE GIRL WITH ALL THE GIFTS (Lionsgate) In a world overrun by flesh-eating zombies, a girl immune to the disease's effects is experimented on as the source of a possible cure, then escapes. Thriller with Gemma Arterton, Paddy Considine, Glenn Close. (R; disturbing violence/bloody images, language)

WE ARE X (Magnolia) Documentary trailing the life and overwhelming popularity — except in the United States — of the extraordinary Japanese rock band X Japan. (R; some language)

THE DAUGHTER (Kino Lorber) A man returns home after fleeing a tragedy years before, and stumbles into a secret. Adapted from an Henrik Ibsen play, with Geoffrey Rush, Anna Torv, Sam Neill. (not rated; some violence)

CATFIGHT (Dark Sky) The fortunes of two former college friends reverse when they get into a nasty fistfight and one ends up in a coma. Dark comedy with Sandra Oh, Anne Heche. (not rated; violence, language)

DETOUR (Magnolia) Obsessed with the idea that his stepfather was involved in the car crash that left his mother in a coma, a law student gets tangled up with grifter and his stripper girlfriend, with dark consequences. Thriller with Tye Sheridan. (R; violence, sexual content, nudity, drug use, pervasive language)

BOKEH (Cinedigm) A couple on a trip to Iceland wake up one morning and discover everyone — everyone — has disappeared. (not rated)

MEAN DREAMS (Lionsgate) Two teenagers (Sophie Nélisse, Josh Wiggins) are on the run from the girl's violent father (Bill Paxton, in his penultimate screen role). (R; some violence, language)

DISTURBING THE PEACE (Virgil) Documentary about former Israeli soldiers and ex-Palestinian fighters who, having renounced their past battles, have become peace activists. In Arabic, Hebrew and English, with English subtitles. (not rated)

SLEEPLESS A dirty Vegas cop (Jamie Foxx) goes gunning for the gangsters who kidnapped his son after a deal goes wrong, while he tries to elude an internal affairs investigator (Michelle Monaghan) determined to bring him down. THE FOUNDER Michael Keaton plays Ray Kroc, a tenacious salesman who stumbles on a burger joint run by the McDonald brothers (Nick Offerman, John Carroll Lynch) and decides to muscle his way in. (PG-13; brief language)

LION Years after he got separated from his family at a train station in India, a young man, long since adopted by an Australian couple, decides to go searching for his birth family. TONI ERDMANN The practical-joking father of a no-nonsense businesswoman fears his daughter is not really living, so he tries to shake things up by tagging along on an international business trip and, in disguise, poses as her boss’ life coach. MONSTER TRUCKS A young man builds his own monster truck, only to discover a real monster comes with it. Computer-generated animation fueled action comedy, with Lucas Till. (PG; brief scary images, some rude humor)

THE BYE BYE MAN Three college friends set out to learn the truth about a character called The Bye Bye Man, whose curse drives people to do horrible things and which can only be avoided by not saying his name or thinking about him. Horror-thriller based on a “strange but true” story set in Sun Prairie, Wis. (PG-13; violence, gore, sexual content, thematic elements, partial nudity, some language, teen drinking)
