A Milwaukee man was charged Monday in the hit-and-run death of another man on the city's south side.

Anthony R. Velazquez, 21, is charged with hit-and-run resulting in death for allegedly striking Israel Soto-Colon, 62, while driving at a high rate of speed in the 1700 block of S. 35th St. at about 3:30 p.m. April 18, according to a criminal complaint.

Soto-Colon was pronounced dead at the scene and Velazquez drove off, abandoning his vehicle nearby and later reporting it stolen, the complaint said.

Surveillance video captured Velazquez abandoning the vehicle and he was arrested the same day, according to the complaint.

Velazquez, who was also charged with knowingly operating a motor vehicle while suspended causing death, was in custody Monday in the Milwaukee County Jail with his bail set at $25,000, according to jail and state court records.

If convicted of both charges, he could be sentenced to up to 31 years in prison, according to the complaint.
