A house fire in Wittman displaced a family Sunday and spread to a nearby residence, destroying two homes, according to officials.

Chief and Fire Marshal Thomas O'Donohue with North County Fire said a man is in custody after admitting to Maricopa County Sheriff's Office deputies he started the fire and was found running  from the scene.

According to officials, the displaced family had a man living with them who has reportedly started fires before.

Units from Surprise, Peoria and North County were dispatched to the area of 31900 North Walnut Street in Wittmann, O'Donohue said.

According to officials, winds conditions carried the flames to an abandoned home next door.

At about 4 p.m., no firefighters were reported injured, but due to the high temperatures and the flames, they were working to stay hydrated, he said.
