College tennis: FGCU women's tennis advances to ASUN championship match

The No. 1 seed Florida Gulf Coast University women’s tennis team beat No. 4 Stetson 4-1 in the Atlantic Sun Championship semifinals at the FGCU Tennis Complex on Saturday, advancing to the ASUN championship match.

In doubles for the FGCU, Naples’ own Sara Kelly and her partner Bridget Forster won 6-0 over Danielle Peele and Alexe Viaud, while Julia Ascua and Julianna Curtis beat Arijana Korac and Maja Salibasic, 6-1.

In singles, Forster beat Viaud, 6-2, 6-0. Curtis won 6-0, 7-5 over Peele and Ascua topped Salibasic, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.

"The girls came out focused and got the job done today," FGCU coach Courtney Vernon said. "We're very thankful to be in our third conference championship. The big thing for us is to come out with a lot of energy and hopefully have a lot of fans out here to support us. The crowd was great today and the girls love playing in front of them. (North Florida) is a solid team and is going to fight hard, but the girls are pumped and ready. They're hungry and want to write a different story."

FGCU hosts UNF in the championship match on Sunday at 9 a.m.

NO. 2 UNF 4, NO. 3 NJIT 0: In doubles for UNF, Kinga Gartner and Michelle Valdez won 6-2 over Natacha Minc and Amanda Helminsky, while Luise Intert and Quetzali Vazquez beat Mayar Eltony and Rafaella Sampaio, 6-3.

In singles for the Ospreys, Vazquez beat Nathalie Habegger, 6-1, 6-0. Rafaela Gomez won 6-3, 6-2 over Sampaio and Intert topped Alba Rosas Garcia, 6-1, 6-2.

"I am proud of the girls composure today on the court,” UNF coach Mariana Cobra said. "We trusted the process and the results showed themselves. Now this is moment that everyone has worked for and now we have to come ready with our attitude and intensity and take care of business against FGCU."
