Cargill dedicates new cooked meats facility in Nebraska

Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts (center) cuts the ribbon at the dedication of the new Cargill cooked meats facility in Columbus, Nebraska.

Cargill held a dedication ceremony Thursday for its new cooked meats facility in Columbus, Nebraska.

The company has spent the last 18 months converting its fresh ground beef plant to a cooked meats operation. Brian Sikes, corporate vice president for Cargill Protein, tells Brownfield the plant will provide customers with an expanded portfolio of protein offerings.

“A myriad of pizza toppings. We can do hogs dogs, we can do different chicken products, taco meat, chiles—all those types of products can be produced out of this facility,” Sikes says.

One of the “anchor customers” for the new facility is Taco Bell.

“They’re the big reason why this expansion happened,” Sike says. “Our relationship with Taco Bell is very strong and growing, and we appreciate that relationship.”

The fast-food chain will be purchasing seasoned ground beef for use in tacos, burritos and other menu items from the Columbus plant. Taco Bell CEO Brian Niccol was on hand for Thursday’s event.
