Lane Kiffin differs from Nick Saban on 'humiliating assistant coaches'

USA TODAY Sports
Alabama outgoing offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin pregame.

Lane Kiffin was on the receiving end of several famous outbursts from former boss Nick Saban during his three years as Alabama offensive coordinator.

Don't expect Kiffin to follow that model now that he is leading his own program at Florida Atlantic.

Speaking to SiriusXM College Sports Nation, Kiffin described his philosophy about dealing with his assistants.

“Those things come up, and everybody has different ways of dealing with them," Kiffin said. "It’s just not really how I do it. I’m not really big on humiliating assistant coaches in front of everybody. I write down notes. In the staff meeting, I explain what we want to get done.”

Despite the seeming criticism of Saban, Kiffin was complimentary of his experience at Alabama and also his time under Pete Carroll at Southern California. He wouldn't say which coach he learned more from.

“That’s kind of a tie with Pete Carroll and Nick Saban, taking stuff from two of the best coaches in the history of football and being both of their offensive coordinators for national championships,” Kiffin said. “There are many great things they both do. I’m in a better position to be a head coach because of them, especially those three years and what I learned under coach Saban.”
