For the first time this spring, the Tennessee football team held practice indoors

Rain and wet grass forced the Vols inside the Anderson Training Center on Thursday for their eighth practice.

UT practiced in front of a large contingent of high school coaches that enrolled in the Tennessee Football Coaching Clinic that runs through Saturday.

After the stretching session, the Vols began with the “Circle of Life” drill. Wide receiver Jauan Jennings flattened safety Todd Kelly Jr. in less than two seconds in one matchup.

Among the other pairings were: Trey Smith vs. Jonathan Kongbo; Justin Martin vs. Tyler Byrd; Ethan Wolf vs. Darrell Taylor; Quay Picou vs. Jack Jones.

A few observations from the remaining portions of practice open to the media:

  • Head coach Butch Jones was back on the microphone in full force. “Physical. Be physical,” Jones implored.
  • Quarterbacks Jarrett Guarantano and Quinten Dormady handed off to a running back during a team drill that required the Vols to hold their blocks for six seconds.
  • Guarantano and Dormady were paired together in a throwing drill for the first two rotations. Eventually they rotated through with Sheriron Jones, Will McBride and Zac Jancek.
  • Freshman offensive lineman Trey Smith appeared to have a contact lens issue that required the trainers to help him put the lens back in place.
