Wastewater upgrade will expand dairy processing

Two West Michigan dairy processors are partnering in wastewater infrastructure improvements and investing more than $173 million in facilities.

Continental Dairy Facilities and Fairlife have been awarded a $2.4 million grant from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation for the project. The city of Coopersville will invest more than $1 million in the $3.7 million upgrades.

The project will include a wastewater pretreatment system and larger pumps for the Coopersville wastewater facility which is currently at capacity.

The dairy processors have put further production expansions on hold until wastewater upgrades can be made.

Wastewater infrastructure has been one of the largest factors for agricultural processing facilities entering and expanding in Michigan including the Clemens Food Group pork processing plant, Glanbia dairy processing plant and Zealand Farm Services’ soybean processing facilities.
