A dense fog advisory was issued shortly before 7 p.m. Tuesday as cold northeast winds began flowing inland off Lake Michigan.

The advisory is in effect until 9 a.m. Wednesday. Visibility was one-quarter mile or less, mostly close to the lakeshore. Some flights were delayed at Mitchell International Airport, though it was unclear whether it was because of the fog.

Meanwhile, a nasty mix of rain and slushy snow is expected to drench southern Wisconsin on Wednesday night into Thursday.

Accumulations of 2 to 3 inches could hit areas north of Madison and Milwaukee, including Fond du Lac, Sheboygan and Green Lake, though southeastern Wisconsin is more likely to get rain, freezing rain and a small amount of snow, according to the National Weather Service.

Whatever falls is expected to be sloppy.

"It will be a wet, unpleasant day," said Sarah Marquardt, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Sullivan.

A low-pressure system will move across southern Illinois on Wednesday, sucking up moisture and depositing it across southern Wisconsin. With temperatures in the low 30s, the snow will be slushy.

Rain is in the forecast Wednesday, possibly during the afternoon commute in the Milwaukee area, before switching over to snow after midnight, said Marquardt. Snow will likely end by late morning Thursday, followed by rain most of the day.

"It will be a little breezy out of the east but with this wetter snow there won't be any blowing snow," Marquardt said.

The forecast for the weekend is decidedly drier than last weekend. It should be mostly sunny Saturday and Sunday with highs in the upper 40s and low 50s.

And for Brewers fans heading to Miller Park for the season opener on Monday, there's good news — the forecast at this point calls for partly sunny skies with a high near 52 in Milwaukee. Tailgaters, start your grills.
