Procession set for slain Everest Metro officer

WESTON - Members of the Wisconsin Honor Guard Association and several local law enforcement agencies are planning a procession for an Everest Metro Police Detective who died in the line of duty Wednesday.

Jason Weiland of the Everest Metro Police Department, along with three other people — Dianne Look, 67, and Karen Barclay, 62, longtime employees of Marathon Savings Bank and attorney Sara Quirt Sann, 43 — died in a Wednesday shooting spree. Suspected gunman Nengmy Vang, 45, was severely wounded in an exchange of gunfire during a standoff with police at Aspen Street Apartments in Weston and was hospitalized as of Saturday night.  

The funeral service for Weiland will be at noon Wednesday at the D.C. Everest Senior High School at 6500 Alderson St. in Weston, according to a news release from the Marathon County Sheriff's Office, which is helping to arrange the funeral.  Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m . Tuesday and then again from 10 a.m.  Wednesday until the time of the funeral service at noon at the school. A procession will begin after the funeral service at the high school. The procession will start around 1 p.m. Wednesday at the high school and end at Brainard Funeral Home and Cremation Center 522 Adams St., Wausau.

The route of this procession will be:

  • North on School Drive to Jelinek Avenue
  • ​East on Jelinek Avenue  to Birch Street 
  • ​North on Birch Street to Schofield Avenue 
  • East on Schofield Avenue to Sternberg Street at the Weston Municipal Center. 
  • North/West on Sternberg Street, past the Everest Metro Police Department, to Mesker Street
  • South on Mesker Street to Schofield Avenue  
  • West on Schofield Avenue to Grand Avenue 
  • North on Grand Avenue to Sixth Street
  • North on Sixth Street to Brainard Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 522 Adams St., Wausau 

Motorists are asked to pay close attention to this area and to anticipate long traffic delays, according to the news release. Motorists are asked to find an alternate route between 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.

If people would like to observe the procession, they are encouraged to come to parking lots and sidewalks along the route, the release said.
