Shiza Shahid, co-founder of the Malala Fund, will talk about the power that comes when women collaborate at Mount Mary University Tuesday.

A student at Mount Mary University works on the patterns for the mural installed in the window of Bergstrom Hall ahead of Shiza Shahid's talk at Mount Mary University Tuesday.

The Malala Fund, started by Shahid and Nobel Prize winner Malala Yousafzai, works to ensure girls around the world can complete 12 years of education. Shahid and Yousafzai met one summer while Shahid was back in her native Pakistan leading a camp. Yousafzai was 12 years old then.

“What I never could have predicted, what I never could have imagined is that one of the little girls who I had started mentoring would go on six years later to become the youngest-ever Nobel Peace Prize winner,” Shahid states in a news release about the event. Shahid is part of a seed-stage venture capital fund and platform, NOW Ventures, that helps mission-driven start-ups.

A mural made by a printmaking class at the university was installed prior to the visit. The mural, which represents the themes of leadership and courage, fills the arched windows of Bergstrom Hall on campus.

Shahid's talk starts at 8 a.m. and will be followed by a moderated question-and-answer session. Registration and a continental breakfast begin at 7:30 a.m. The event takes place in the Alumnae Dining Room at the university, 2900 N. Menomonee River Parkway. Tickets are $35. Online ticket sales close Monday at 9 a.m., but tickets are available at the door the morning of the event.
